Again

It's that time again, every four years. It seems that every time a Mexican national football team plays in the United States in a qualifying match versus the host country, we get nicked. Damn! I mean, football is the national passtime in Mexico. No other sport is played as much, by so many players. The country virtually pauses to watch these games. Maybe we should invent a new sport; human sacrifice, anyone?

Everything seemed to be going smoothly. First place in the standings coming into the game (albeit, only one point above the american team). A single point (equivalent to a tie) was required for Mexico to be on ther side (see you in Germany, 2006!!). All we had to do is play nice. Make no mistakes, and we were homefree. 80 million mexicans awaited the positive result (at least a tie, in the worst case) and was ready to celebrate our assured participation in the Month that we wait for and enjoy every four years. Ricardo Antonio Lavolpe, the head coach was even speculating on how he was gonna take vacations after the game since, obviously, Mexico would have qualified by then. Yeah, right!

It is a National Shame. We can lose against any other team, and justify it somehow. But not to the US. Not now. Not ever! We've suffered to much humiliation already at their hands. Some payback is forthcoming. Of course, the assumption is that mexican football is soooo much superior than what is practiced north of the Rio Bravo (I know that english-speakers will say, "you mean Rio Grande"; don't worry, it's the same river, just different name). And I stand that, overall, it is. But something is wrong with that picture, if we haven't been able to beat them on their home turf since 1972.

That's a long time. Sure, in official matches other mexican teams have bested their american counterparts, but it is becoming rarer as time goes by. The humiliation suffered when the US team ousted the Tri in the 2002 World Cup is still fresh in my mind. Besides the obvious wound to national pride, I had to pay a Tequila bottle I bet to an american friend. This was more than humiliating, it was outright painful.

So, we'll await for the next game. Then we can have our revenge. Or will we? Hmmm, next time lets convice these guys to play in Los Angeles, or Chicago. Yeah, we can beat them there. I guess. Maybe.
